Doug turned the lawn mower as his mind drifted back to the night before. It had gone better than he expected. He hadnât been sure how Raven would react to the baby, given the birth incident. But sheâd bonded with Colton pretty well. And at some point sheâd even rocked the baby, as evidenced by a photo Kristin took.
Best of all, on the ride home, sheâd acted normal. Raven normal, but still normal. No intense urgency to study Spanish. And sheâd even put the Rubikâs Cube back in her purse and focused on their conversation instead. Maybe she was coming around to the notion of having a baby.
Doug cut off the lawn mower and went in the house. On his way to the bedroom, he spotted Raven on the elliptical. He stopped in the doorframe and waited for her to pull out her earbuds.
âHey, you want to go eat in a bit?â
âSure.â Raven smiled and nodded before replacing her earbuds.
He assumed she was listening to music or a book, since she didnât answer with si. Or maybe she hadnât yet learned the Spanish word for âsure.â
Doug smiled back and went to take a shower. By the time he started getting dressed, Raven came in to take a shower.
âYou look nice.â
âThanks. I thought weâd go to The Sizzle.â On the rare occasion Raven could decide where she wanted to eat, she always chose this upscale steakhouse.
Raven wrapped her arms around Dougâs neck. He hugged her close and squeezed her small frame, not caring that her T-shirt was sweaty and heâd just showered. âSo start getting ready, as we all know it takes you a while.â
Raven unwrapped her arms and pinched his cheek.
âOuch.â Doug rubbed his cheek and laughed. He buttoned his shirt and grabbed his shoes, then he headed to the living room for some TV while he waited.
Raven surprised him by stepping into the living room, fully dressed and ready to go, in less than two episodes of âNerdy Discoveries.â
âWow.â Doug glanced down at his wrist, pretending to check the time on his Apple watch. âI didnât even have time to see how gum is made.â
Raven rolled her eyes. âWell, get over it. Iâm hungry, and you told me to be quick.â
âI know, and Iâm impressed.â And he was.
On average, he could fit in a solid hour of TV before Raven completed her beautification rituals. Which was why he usually had until she finished her hair before he needed to get ready. In the time she took to fix her face, he could clean his whole body and get dressed.
Raven crossed the room, her yellow sundress swaying around her tan legs. He stood when she reached his chair. He kissed the top of her forehead and laced his fingers with hers. As they stepped out the back door, hand in hand, the sound of clanging tools and rock music blared from beside their garage. Opening the garage door revealed the source of the commotion.
Bob, the dude next door, was bent down, tinkering with a motorcycle in his own driveway.
